2025 EDUCAUSE AI Landscape Study

"The higher education community continues to grapple with questions related to using artificial intelligence (AI) in learning and work. In support of these efforts, we present the 2025 EDUCAUSE AI Landscape Study, summarizing our community sentiments and experiences related to strategy and leadership, policies and guidelines, use cases, the higher education workforce, and the institutional digital divide" (EDUCAUSE, 2025). 2025 EDUCAUSE AI Landscape Study

1 • 2025 EDUCAUSE AI Landscape Study: Into the Digital AI Divide
In support of these efforts, we present the 2025 EDUCAUSE AI Landscape Study, summarizing our community's sentiments and experiences related to strategy and leadership, policies and guidelines, use cases, the higher education workforce, and the institutional digital divide.
2 • Strategy and Leadership
The current status of institutional AI strategy shows both evidence of progress and a need for more work. More than half of respondents to this year's survey (57%) agreed or strongly agreed that "we view AI as a strategic priority," up from 49% in last year's study.
3 •Policies and Guidelines
Institutional policies and guidelines can be a critical part of mitigating the inappropriate and unethical uses of AI that are a concern of many respondents.
4 • Use Cases
Institutions are using AI for all key functions. Consistent with the impact of AI in other aspects of the institution (e.g., policy), teaching and learning is the function most likely to be the focus of the institution's AI use (59%), followed closely by administration (52%).
5 • Workforce
Institutions are primarily accommodating AI-related work by upskilling existing staff. Asked about their AI-related work responsibilities, 61% of this year's respondents said they have work responsibilities related to AI, compared to 56% in 2024.
6 • Special Focus: The Digital AI Divide between Institutions
As demonstrated throughout this report, the successful adoption of AI demands a staggering array of resources and capabilities—funding, staffing, leadership, strategic and operational resilience, technology and data infrastructure—and some institutions more than others have those resources and capabilities readily at their disposal.
7 • Recommendations and Resources
Recommended actions to take and collection of AI related resources offered by EDUCAUSE.
8 • Methodology and Acknowledgements
The 2025 EDUCAUSE AI Landscape study survey comprised 52 closed- and open-ended questions. (The full survey instrument is available online.)
9 • Respondent Demographics
Demographics included primary job role, area of responsibility, years worked in higher ed, institution FTE and type, and MSI Status. Comparison respondents to of IPEDS population was also included.
