"Various definitions of poetry highlight the importance of an original combination of words, distinctive sound, and emotional impact" (Norton, 2003, p.320).


Poetry titles will include a range of formats, from picture books to full anthologies. When exploring the collection, you will find that not all picture books are for young children - and not all anthologies are for young adults. Poetry as a classification will include children's poetry, epic poetry, rhymes, limericks, haiku, and nursery rhymes.

Archer Library's juvenile collection includes a poetry titles in a wide variety of poetic genres. They may be categorized as Poetry, Novels in Verse, Young Adult Poetry, Juvenile Poetry, and even nursery rhymes and Limericks. When browsing the collection for poetry, many call numbers will start with P, PN, PR, and PS.
