EndNote Citation Management: Cite While You Write

Download the plug-in

From nearly every page of EndNote Web there is a link to download installers.  Click this link to download the Microsoft Word plug-in. Follow the directions on the screen or make use of the help guide. It is recommended that you use IE for the installation. 

This tool is available for both Windows and Mac systems.

Cite While You Write will appear as a toolbar in your Microsoft Word application.

If you want to use EndNote Online with Cite While You Write, but don't want to install the EndNote program, you can download the EndNote Web Plug-in by logging into EndNote Online, hovering over "Options" and then clicking "Download Installers".

Inserting citations in your paper

Find and insert a citation in your Word document using EndNote Web’s Find Citation(s) tool. This tool searches your library (all reference fields for all references)

 

  1. Move the cursor where you want the citation .
  2. Depending on your version of Word, you will need to find the EndNote toolbar and click on "find citations".
  3. Enter a search term to find the references. You can use keywords, author names, etc.  
  4. Click search - your EndNote Web library will be searched and a list of matching references will appear.
  5. Select the reference(s) you want.
  6. Click insert.

Editing references

Use the edit citations tool to fix errors or delete your citations created with Cite While You Write.

Highlight the reference you wish to edit and click on the edit citations button.
