Persuasive Speaking

Persuasive speaking, "the process of motivating others through communication, to change a particular belief, attitude, value, or behavior" (Alder, 2024, p. 414).

Persuasion

Persuasion makes a listener want to think or act differently (Adler, 2024, p. 415-16).

  • Persuasion Is Usually Incremental:  Persuasion is a process. When it is successful, it generally succeeds over time, usually in increments. 
  • Persuasion Is Interactive: Persuasion isn't something you do to audience members but rather something you do with them
  • Persuasion Can Be Ethical: Persuasion can influence others' lives in worthwhile ways.
