COM 101 • Human Communication [Randall-Griffiths]: Informative Speech

Library resources & information for Dr. Randall-Griffiths COM 101 course.

Informative Speeches

The primary types of informative speech have to do with the content and purpose of the speech (Adler, 2024, p. 386).

By Content

Informative speeches are generally categorized according to content (Adler, 2024, p. 386).

  • Speeches About Objects:  This type of informative speech is about anything that is tangible (that is, capable of being seen or touched).
  • Speeches About Processes: A process is any series of actions that leads to a specific result.
  • Speeches About Concepts:  Concepts include intangible ideas, such as beliefs, theories, ideas, and principles.

By Purpose

We ask "Does the speaker seek to describe, explain, or instruct?" (Adler, 2024, p, 386-7)

  • Descriptions: A descriptive speech uses details to create a "word picture" of the essential factors that make that thing what it is.
  • Explanations: Explanations clarify ideas and concepts that are already known but not understood by an audience. Explanations often deal with the question of why or how.
  • Instructions: Instructions teach something to the audience in a logical, step-by-step manner. They often deal with the question of how to.
