PICO Research: Citation Tools

Publication manual of the American Psychological Association.

Nursing scholarship uses the American Psychological Association (APA) style for standards in citation and formatting.  We have copies of the APA Publication Manual in the Reference section (main floor), and in Reserves (at the Check-Out desk).

DOIs

The most recent revision from APA, directs researchers to use DOIs to identify resources when possible.

What is a digital object identifier, or DOI?

A digital object identifier (DOI) is a unique alphanumeric string assigned by a registration agency (the International DOI Foundation) to identify content and provide a persistent link to its location on the Internet. The publisher assigns a DOI when your article is published and made available electronically.

All DOI numbers begin with a 10 and contain a prefix and a suffix separated by a slash. The prefix is a unique number of four or more digits assigned to organizations; the suffix is assigned by the publisher and was designed to be flexible with publisher identification standards.

We recommend that when DOIs are available, you include them for both print and electronic sources. The DOI is typically located on the first page of the electronic journal article, near the copyright notice. The DOI can also be found on the database landing page for the article.

A DOI looks like this

DOI:  10.1177/1555458913498475

Once you know a particular DOI, you can use it to search for the article much the same way that you would use an ISBN number to search for a book.

EndNote Overview

The DNP program will be using the EndNote citation management tool. EndNote allows you to create your own personal database of references, known as an EndNote 'Library'.

EndNote also works in conjunction with Microsoft Word allowing you to:

  • easily insert references from your EndNote Library into your Word document
  • automatically create a bibliography at the end of your document in the reference style of your choice!

This video provides a brief tour of all the things EndNote can do for you.

To learn more, see our  Endnote Citation Management Research Guide.  (NOTE: this guide is a work in progress.  It's only accessible from this page at this time)
