  APA Tutorial

Publication manual of the American Psychological Association.

Nursing scholarship uses the American Psychological Association (APA) style for standards in citation and formatting.  We have copies of the APA Publication Manual in the Reference section (main floor), and in Reserves (at the Check-Out desk).

  DOIs

The most recent revision from APA directs researchers to use DOIs to identify resources when possible.

What is a digital object identifier, or DOI?

A digital object identifier (DOI) is a unique alphanumeric string assigned by a registration agency (the International DOI Foundation) to identify content and provide a persistent link to its location on the Internet. The publisher assigns a DOI when your article is published and made available electronically.

All DOI numbers begin with a 10 and contain a prefix and a suffix separated by a slash. The prefix is a unique number of four or more digits assigned to organizations; the suffix is assigned by the publisher and was designed to be flexible with publisher identification standards.

We recommend that when DOIs are available, you include them for both print and electronic sources. The DOI is typically located on the first page of the electronic journal article, near the copyright notice. The DOI can also be found on the database landing page for the article.

Google Scholar

This searches across many scholarly Internet sources, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles.  Google Scholar is especially useful for tracking down or verifying difficult or partial citations.  Unlike other search engines, Google Scholar can link you to quality resources because of  your affiliation with AU and OhioLINK. When on campus your search results will indicate if the items are available through OhioLINK.

To show links to OhioLINK Resources from off-campus, you will need to change Google Preferences on your computer.

  • On the Google Scholar page, click "Scholar Preferences."  (The link is to the right of the search box.)
  • In the "Library Links" box, type in "Ohiolink" and click "Find Library."
  • Put check marks in the boxes that appear:

OhioLINK- Find it with OLinks

Open WorldCat - Library Search

  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Save Preferences."
  • You may now start searching for articles in Google Scholar. If an article is available full-text through one of our subscription databases, you will see a link that says "Full-Text from OhioLINK OLinks"
